You 2.0 – Your Future Is Now

I love finding ways to help people make the changes they want to to improve their health. When my patients don’t make the changes they want to, or think they should, I commonly see them default to thinking they just don’t have enough willpower and that they “just need to do it”. I find that that thinking doesn’t get people very far. When a patient is feeling stuck I take the time with them to explore the real barriers they are facing, to bring in some self compassion and to explore new, more helpful, ways of thinking.

Connecting with your future self

One tool that I’ve found to be helpful is connecting with your future self. That’s what this podcast episode is all about. It explores different motivating factors that come up as we look at behavior, as well as the disconnect we see when our current actions don’t benefit our future selves. It’s a very fascinating discussion and I encourage you to give it a listen.

Write a letter to future you

One of my favorite ideas from the episode is the idea of connecting with your future self by writing a letter to or from future you. If you have some behaviors you’ve been wanting to change and have been feeling stuck, give it a try.

Diet culture references

Note of caution for anyone who has been harmed by diet culture: This episode highlights some great ideas about connecting with our future selves, but it also contains casual references to behavior change that are right in line with diet culture. I recognize that these could be triggering to some folks and wanted to make note of it. If you want to minimize hearing these references and still hear my favorite part of the episode listen along from the 20 minute mark until the 31:30 mark.
